NWFL Super 6: Football unites old friends as love, peace spread around Ijebu Ode https://www.onwardnews24.com/nwfl-super-6-football-unites-old-friends-as-love-peace-spread-around-ijebu-ode/ https://www.onwardnews24.com/nwfl-super-6-football-unites-old-friends-as-love-peace-spread-around-ijebu-ode/#respond Thu, 22 Apr 2021 15:38:35 +0000 http://www.onwardnews24.com/?p=4852 Sworn enemies have dropped their weapons, war zones have become graveyards, gunshots have become goals, bullets have become balls as the NWFL Super six is daily uniting stakeholders of the beautiful game, who have all agreed to bury the hatchets for the sake of Nigeria football.

For many months, leading to years, Christopher Green, a strong admirer and promoter of Aisha Falode, felt betrayed and stayed meters away. He was at the forefront of the protest against the Super 6 holding in Ijebu Ode but on a day when Rivers Angels pummeled Bayelsa Queens in a local derby, Green was all smiles and went in search of Falode.

The hug was full of life and assurances, the laughter came from a clean heart and for every word he muttered, it dropped from a mouth full of remorse and regrets.

” Why fight a woman i nutured? Why join the enemies to destroy a castle I painstakingly built? Why involve myself in the killing of a daughter that once called me father”?

These questions crept through his mind as he looked into the eyes of an innocent woman who holds no grudges. A woman who has done her best to thrive where others failed. A woman who has brought perfection, panache and style to the women’s game. Out of the little resources available, she has done great things.

Standing beside Green was Chief Boma Iyaye, the commissioner for sports in Rivers state. He showered praises on Aisha Falode for her efforts and encouraged her to keep doing her best for the good of the game.

Like Green, Aisha was a member of the old order, both have invested their passion, time and money in uplifting Nigeria football and both certainly have legacies that will not be forgotten.

Aisha Falode appreciates the criticisms and has promised to improve where need be but in all humility, she pleads for the support of all and sundry in this difficult task of repositioning women’s football in Nigeria.

She has started on a good footing, she looks destined for the very top of a career that men dominates. She is not ready to make enemies, rather she is inviting everyone to the party. Let’s join hands to do it right she pleads.

” I must say I am well satisfied with what I saw today, the level of play, the organisation as well as the reception.

“The homebased players are as competent as the foreign based players and I think some of these players are good enough to play for the Super Eagles. We are proud of the good works Aisha Falode is doing and we shall continue to give her all the necessary supports.

“I am satisfied with the standard of officiating, and as a body, the NFF, NWFL does not believe in mediocrity. The the true winner will eventually emerge at the end of the day.” He concluded.

NWPL Matchday 1 Review: Edo Queens, Delta Queens Dominate; Amazons, Ibom Angels Lost at Home https://www.onwardnews24.com/nwpl-matchday-1-review-edo-queens-delta-queens-dominate-amazons-ibom-angels-lost-at-home/ https://www.onwardnews24.com/nwpl-matchday-1-review-edo-queens-delta-queens-dominate-amazons-ibom-angels-lost-at-home/#respond Thu, 10 Dec 2020 06:47:54 +0000 http://www.onwardnews24.com/?p=2975 The 2021 NWFL Premiership got underway on wednesday with the match-day one fixtures played across seven centres in the country which created some thrilling moments in the Nigeria Women Football top-tier.

The first match of the new season recorded 19 goals, two away victories, a draw and four home wins.

Nasarawa Amazons 0 FC Robo 1

Nasarawa Amazons on Wednesday lost their second consecutive league opener at home. In 2019, the “Solid Babes” lost their first game at home to Bayelsa Queens with Anjor Mary scoring a brace in that encounter.

The home team created alot of goal scoring chances in the first half, but failed to convert them, however they were punished in the 32nd minute through FC Robo’s young forward Shobowale Rukayat.

Ibom Angels 0 Osun Babes 1

Osun Babes started the season in an impressive fashion with a win at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo. The opening half hour left much to be desired as both teams struggled to make strings of successful passes, but Osun Babes woke up after the mark. Yetunde Fajobi sent in a low cross that was met by Yemisi Samuel and the forward wasted no time in converting coolly to give the Omoluabi Queens an away victory.

Bayelsa Queens 2 Sunshine Queens 1

Bayelsa Queens Captain Joy Jerry started the season with aplomb as she led the Restoration Ladies to a 2-1 win over strong opponent Sunshine Queens FC.

Precious Vincent who just joined from Sunshine Queens scored the second goal in the 27th minute, while Seun Fakunle reduced the deficit in the 41st minute.

Edo Queens 4 Royal Queens 1

Edo Queens enjoyed total control over their opponents from the blast of the whistle. It was a comfortable win for the Rollandson Odeh girls as they romped over their neighbours Royal Queens by 4-1. Tessy Biahwo scored twice for the “Obaseki Girls” while Taibat Odueke also got her name on the scoring list.

Confluence Queens 1 Rivers Angels 1

The hosts played a good game, regularly threatening Ibubeleye Whyte in the first ten minutes of the game and got rewarded in the 7th minute through Glory Edet, but Regina Otu got Rivers Angels levelled in the 14th minute to make it 1-1.

Abia Angels 2 Pelican Stars 0

Abia Angels played an impressive attacking game against Pelican Stars at the Umuahia Township Stadium on Wednesday evening. Margeret Ademulegun’s sublime free-kick in the 15th minute handed the ‘Angels from the East’ a lead before Jane Abraham doubled in the 47th minute to give the host a 2-0 victory over the Ayade Ladies.

Delta Queens 4 DreamStar Ladies 1

Delta Queens started off the 2021 campaign with a big win over Lagos based team DreamStar Ladies in Agbor. Former Jokodolu Babes forward Dominance Odubanjo scored a brace, while Iyasere Gift and Agbonu Aghogho netted to make it four, before Bankole Sofiat scored a consolation goal in the 77th minute.

Nasarawa Amazons had a difficult season last year and failed to make it to the super 4 for the first time in 7 years as Bayelsa Queens topped their Group.

Also on Wednesday, Bayelsa Queens will host Sunshine Queens at the Samson Siasia Stadium, in what promises to be one of the standout fixtures of the opening round, Osun Babes will be facing Ibom Angels in Uyo, Delta Queens against Dreamstar Ladies, Edo Queens up against Royal Queens in Benin, while Abia Angels will host Pelican Stars. Another interesting fixture to look forward to this mid-week is undoubtedly the game between Confluence Queens and Rivers Angels, where Whyte Ogbonda will be facing his boss Edwin Okon again after losing to him in the finals of 2019 Super 4 in Lagos.

www.thenwfl.com took a look at the seven opening games this mid-week and analysed each of the games.

NASARAWA VS FC ROBO. (Lafia City Stadium, Lafia)

Same fixture as that of the 2018 opening game. Both teams have a very similar style, playing from the back and holding a very high backline while pressing.

Nasarawa Amazons forward Chiemere Opara who is back after a long layoff from injury could be an important player upfront for the ‘Solid Babes’ , Amarachi Okoronkwo, Adejoke Ejalonibu are also both experienced and could play an important role in the game, while the trio of Monday Gift, Folashade Ijamilisu and Esther Oyenezide should be handy for the defence line of Nasarawa Amazons.

BAYELSA QUEENS VS SUNSHINE QUEENS (Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa)

This should be one of the biggest opening matches of the NWFL Premiership. Wemimo Matthew and Moses Aduku are accomplished Managers in the Premiership and that will surely tell on the game.

Despite Bayelsa Queens recent victory at the Flying Officers Cup, Aduku still thinks his side have a great hurdle to cross in the league.

Joy Jerry, Anjor Mary, Vincent Precious are all rearing to go against a Sunshine Queens side who has Suliat Abideen, Iheoma Goodness and Innocent Patricia all in good form too. The Super Falcons coach will be looking to secure atleast a point in Yenagoa, which explains the fact that they will be going all out to score first before their host.

IBOM ANGELS VS OSUN BABES. (Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo)

Osun Babes have a good record in Uyo, the Omoluabi Queens have only lost once in their last four meetings at the ‘Daakada’ State.

Both teams have beefed up their squad and will be aiming to pick favourable results when they battle in Uyo on wednesday.

New signing Juliet Bassey should play an important role, same with Uyime Johnson who joined back from Edo Queens.

Meanwhile, Osun Babes had a very difficult start to the season last time around and will be looking to start off better this time around. In-form forwards Yemisi Samuel, Kesiena Ojiwovyi, Yetunde Fajobi might give the “Orange Ladies” defence alot of problems too. We are in for an exciting encounter.

ABIA ANGELS VS PELICAN STARS (Umuahia Township Stadium, Umuahia).

It is not the most heavyweight battle of the week, but Ann Chiejine would surely love to start on a winning note.

No doubt she has done something special at Abia Angels, since joining the ‘Angels from the East’ four seasons ago. The Super Falcons manager will be facing an experienced too in Edat Egan, who has a team that can cause problems for their host.

Abia Angels will be depending on Camerounian duo of Belong Michelle and Bakendj Reine, while striker Jane Abraham is also a player to watch out.

DELTA QUEENS VS DREAMSTAR LADIES (Agbor Stadium, Agbor)

Delta Queens will be hosting Lagos based side Dreamstar Star Ladies at the Agbor Stadium, Delta State, in what promises to be highly engaging. Both teams lost key players last year and have surely signed new players to replace them. Coach Anya Ugochi technical prowess will be tested in Agbor on Wednesday evening, Anuoluwapo Salisu, Juliet Emereole and Hambefen Ayatsea are players the ‘Galaticas’ will be relying on, while the host will be keying on Ajuyah Jennifer, Captain Ihuoma Onuegbu, Ijeh Eluemunor and others.

EDO QUEENS VS ROYAL QUEENS (UNIBEN Sports Complex, Benin).

Rollandson Odeh will be expecting nothing but victory, when the ‘Obaseki Ladies’ faces Royal Queens on matchday one in Benin.

The two sides met at the Flying Officers Cup some weeks ago with the game ending 1-1.

Captain Fantastic Osas Igbinovia will be leading her team infront of their home fans for the first time in the league and the experienced midfielder will be hoping that the likes of Taibat Odueke, Jumoke Alani, Rebecca Ajimuda can live up and help defeat a youthful Royal Queens side which includes Osas Enoma, Chioma Oliseh, Vera Samuel and others.

The ‘Canadian Geese’ will be hoping to cause an upset in Benin. This is a game you wouldn’t want to miss!!

CONFLUENCE QUEENS VS RIVERS ANGELS (Confluence Stadium, Lokoja).

It’s going to be a big test for Whyte Ogbonda. His former side Rivers Angels will be thinking of picking a point or more at the Confluence Stadium on Wednesday.

Ogbonda is a manager who brings out the best in his players and will definitely do the same against Rivers Angels. Joy Omewa will be hoping to score goals against a side who desperately needed her services two years ago.

Christopher Precious will be playing at the Confluence Stadium for the first time since making a big money move to the ‘Jewels Of Rivers’.

NWPL: Danjuma X-rays Women Football League under Falode https://www.onwardnews24.com/nwpl-danjuma-x-rays-women-football-league-under-falode/ https://www.onwardnews24.com/nwpl-danjuma-x-rays-women-football-league-under-falode/#respond Mon, 07 Dec 2020 12:20:48 +0000 http://www.onwardnews24.com/?p=2856

” NWFL under the leadership of Aisha Falode has witnessed great and wide improvement in so many area, which are there for all to see”.– Christopher Danjuma Assessing the present NWFL.

That the NWFL premiership will commence on the 9th of December 2020 is no longer news but the similarity is that the league opener starring Nasarawa Amazons against FC Robo is a repeat of the NWFL 2018 Premiership season where a goaless scoreline was recorded.

Nasarawa Amazons will be going into the match on Wednesday without the services of their ever reliable forward Anam Imo who moved to Rosengard in Sweden then but currently plays for Pitea another Swedish outfit. Most touched will be FC Robo of Lagos who will parade players without the services of her ever reliable Captain Rasheedat Ajibade, a one time joint highest goalscorer of the NWFL premiership who plies her trade in Norway with Avaldsnes and Chidinma Okeke now with Madrid CFF.

The match is going to be explosive as the wounded Nasarawa Amazons will want to shake off the defeat by Bayelsa Queens in the finals of the recently concluded ‘Flying Officers Cup’ in Abuja while Coach Osahon known as a grassroot coach and has a knack for discovering players with potential will look forward to finding quality replacements for Rasheedat Ajibade and Chidinma Okeke.

Coach Christopher Danjuma who is the coach of Nasarawa Amazons and also the Head coach of the Falconets Nigeria’ U20 women’s national team spoke on the positive impact of the NWFL on the home grown players :

” A lot of oppourtunities have come the way of players, coaches and team managers in the NWFL, the league has improved with the officiating, the introduction of the charity cup and a well structured super 4 during the abridged league.

As a coach I am happy to be part of the NWFL.
The standard of organisation has greatly improved and the most important is the impact of the home grown players in the national teams”.

Danjuma further explained that the last edition of the U20 world cup in France which he handled the team had no course to look for foreign based players as All the players were ALL home based players. “The home based players played both the qualifiers and the U20 world cup proper.

Immediately after the tournament about a dozen players all moved abroad”.

He enlightened that this singular feat shows the level of competition and standard in the NWFL leagues. The players were able to express themselves in the world stage hence their easy movement abroad.

Danjuma also pointed out that the Last women WAFU cup won by Nigeria were all home based players except just one player.

The coach who was so estactic about this positive strides is ready to prove that a lot of quality players abound in the home scene and are yet to be unearthed by the clubs abroad.

” Ms Falode has been up and doing and is indeed a blessing to the NWFL” he rounded up.
