Sports Writers across the country have been challenged to equip themselves with the necessary digital skills to reposition themselves for greater efficiency.

Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Kogi State chapter, Comrade Aturu Bishop made the call in Lokoja while declaring open an In-house training on Digital Skills for Sports writers in the state, on Friday.

Bishop disclosed that the training was organised to provide sports reporters with latest digital skills to deepen and enhance their professional practice.

According to the Chairman, “as people saddled with the responsibility of informing the populace on latest developments around the globe, it is also imperative that you are well and better informed.”

He said the training was expected to reinvigorate the machinery of news reporting, providing modern day access and well-balanced reportage.

Bishop maintained that the current Council will continue to strive further in improving the welfare and well-being of every member, adding that it was also incumbent on them to reciprocate by supporting the council to prosecute its laudable programs.

He enjoined members to take advantage of the training to boost their professional calling in order to be able to carry out their duties effectively.

The training which dwelled on contemporary skills and trends in Information and Communication technology was organised by the Kogi State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria.

The Honorable Minister of Youth and Sports Development Mr. Sunday Dare has condoled with the sport writers Association of Nigeria, Abuja Chapter and the family of Segun Ogunjimi over his death.


A statement by the Minister said “I received the news of Segun Ogunjimi’s death with utmost shock and sadness in my heart.

“He was not just a dedicated journalist, but someone I knew personally because of his zeal and commitment to the activities of the Ministry.

“He was so passionate about his job, full of life and vigor. He was one of the few journalists I took personal note of on assuming office due to his unrivalled professionalism and dedication to duty.

“I recall that last year he was in my office for my birthday celebration where I granted him an exclusive interview and we took personal pictures. it’s so unfortunate that we have lost a great journalist in Segun Ogunjimi, but we cannot question God. I commiserate with his wife, son, extended family and the entire SWAN members on this sad incident.

“My prayer is that God grants the family and the sports community the fortitude to bear this huge loss. May his soul rest in peace”.

Speaking in a brief ceremony in Abuja announcing the appointment, organiser and sole financier of the tournament, ex-international, Ifeanyi Ekwueme expressed confidence that with Nwankpa involved, the 2nd edition will beat the records set by the maiden edition.

His words; “I have no doubt that with Clemo’s experience we will achieve our lofty goals in this edition. The first edition was very successful. This one should even be more successful”.

He continued; “Nobody should blame me for being personal with Clemo. Both of us have come a long way. We call ourselves ‘For Show’ dating back to my active days in football, both in Europe and the national team. He was the one handling my media activities. I know he is a thorough professional, who knows the job.

“When time came for this edition, I had to personally go to Abuja to see him and ensure he comes on board for this one. This is a marquee signing that will surely rub off on the tournament”.

Thirteen teams will take part in this edition. They are defending champions Lobi Stars, Enyimba, Rivers United, Heartland, Rangers, Abia Warriors, Warri Wolves, FC IfeanyiUbah, Ingass FC, Apex Krane, Ifeanyi Ekwueme Academy, J. Atete, PXEL Football Academy.

Lobi Stars won the maiden edition last year by defeating Ingass FC.

The tournament is primarily meant for clubs using the Tico/Select brand of kits but other clubs are also accommodated.
