COVID19 Lockdown Order: No plan to increase bread price – Kwara Bakers

The Kwara State Master Bakers Association has refuted claims from some quarters that its planning to increase the price of bread amidst lockdown in the state.

Speaking on this development, the chairman of Kwara State Master Bakers Association, Alh. Abdulfatai Alaba stated this in Ilorin in an exclusive interview with Abdul Momoh.

According to him, “the union has no plan whatsoever to increase the price of the commodity despite upsurge in the prices of materials used in the production of bread as a result of shortfalls in the supply of ingredients owing to the covid-19 pandemic and with Ramadan period now around.

“Yes, the present market situation demand such an increment in the prices of our product because virtually all our raw materials have increased in price.

“But we, the Kwara Master Bakers deem it inappropriate to compound the burden of our customers and indeed resident in the state by refusing to add to the price of bread in the state,” Alaba said.

Alhaji Alaba added that despites pains and calls from his members on the need to inflate the price of bread in the state, the headship of the union rather sought a softlanding for its members in place of price increment.

“Our members across the state often called narrating the ordeal bedeviled their business since the emergence of the Coronavirus which hitherto led to lockdown in the state and invariably drop in sales. But we said no to their agitation of price increase.

“People are in hardship, and one of the best way to share in their ordeal is to sustain the present price. We should not add money now, though we can do that later,” he said.

The Bakers Chairman in Kwara State commended the Kwara State Government for given its members a pass which has enabled them to move around to dispense their product despite the stay at home order by the government.

The Director of ‘Alaba Buttered Bread’ also affirmed that Master Bakers in the state is strictly adherent to all the rules and regulations placed by the government toward curtailing the spread of covid-19 pandemic.

“We have ordered our members to put in place sanitizers and other hygienic Incentives in their bakeries so as to mitigates the spread of the virus.”

Alhaji Alaba however advised the Kwara State Government to increase its palliative stimulus package to the inhabitants of Kwara State so as to cushion the effect of the lockdown order by the governments.

He cautioned citizens in the state to avoid buying unregistered bread seller which poses harmful to their health.
